Cultivated Seafood Company Introduces Cytoponics

Mermade, an Israeli cultivated seafood company, has revealed its plan for achieving sustainable mass production of scallops. The cellular aquaculture pioneer plans to adapt aquaponics to develop a new category of cellular agriculture - cytoponics. Aquaponics is a food production system that uses the nutrient-rich water from raising aquatic animals to feed plants which then purify the water for the animals. With cytoponic technology, the waste produced by the cultivated cells will be converted by algae into amino acids and sugars that will then feed the cells. The algae works to naturally replenish the growth media required to produce the cells, which currently accounts for up to 95% of the cost of cultivated meat. This technology creates a recyclable fermentation-based process that results in clean, healthy, and sustainable protein-rich seafood products.
