BioTech Foods, a subsidiary of Brazil-based JBS, the world's largest meat producer, has announced the construction of its first commercial-scale plant to produce cultivated meat. This new plant in Spain is projected to produce more than 1,000 metric tons of cultivated beef annually. The $41 million plant is set to be completed by mid-2024 and will gradually increase its production capacity to meet growing consumer demand. BioTech plans to market the products to Australia, Brazil, the European Union, Japan, Singapore, and the United States.
"With the challenges imposed on global supply chains, cultivated protein offers the potential to stabilise food security and global protein production." - Iñigo Charola, BioTech Foods CEO.
JBS also announced plans to invest $60 million in the construction of the Food and Protein Biotechnology R&D Center in southern Brazil to further the development of cultivated meat.
